Artist talk: AIGANA GALI

Curator Indira Dyussebayeva talks with the artist Aigana Gali about her practice and new series of work. Aigana Gali is a multidisciplinary artist based in London who works across a wide range of media, from canvas and paper to textiles and bronze, in a dynamic process guided by the essential character of each series. Gali was born on the crossing of the Great Silk Road in Almaty, Kazakhstan, to a Georgian, spending a formative year in between the two countries. This rich cultural heritage is an infinite source of inspiration for her work. Just as the Saka buried treasures in the endless plains of the steppe, Gali’s paintings are embedded with subtle historical or mythical references. After relocating to London, Gali explored the ways in which to communicate and translate her cultural background. Over the past decade, she has developed an important body of work delineated by series: Creation Myth, Steppe and Tengri. Each series represents a metaphorical chapter in her evolution as an artist and thinker, so Gali adapts both her technique and materials according to the series' unique, essential and abstracted schema.
