PULOTA. LIDA BLINOVA

«Lida Blinova is an absolute genius. One of the subtlest and smartest creatures to ever walk upon Earth»
- Alexander Brener, (book «The art of life and the art of seeing»)

The short biographical documentary Lida Blinova produced by Saule and Suinbike Suleimenova was screened during the 'Bread and Roses' exhibition and as part of the 'Northern Barbarians' program in Amsterdam. The short yet bright life of the artist is narrated by her friends: a director Rashid Nugmanov, architect Almas Ordabayev, artist Zitta Sultanbayeva and others, who reminisce about her. Lidia Blinova laid the foundation of contemporary art in Kazakhstan and was an important figure on the stage of underground art in Almaty. Nonetheless, those who knew Lida well remember her as a humble person, who remained overshadowed by her husband, Rustam Halfin, an artist of great renown. From 1970 to 1980, Lidia Blinova was one of the apartment exhibition organisers in Almaty, among the followers of the Vladimir Sterligov’s legacy. She also worked as a set decorator in Sergey Bodrov’s films. Moreover, she participated in the development of projects for a new square in Almaty. She influenced many artists of Central Asia, but, unfortunately, many of her works have been lost throughout the years.

«Every person, who had a chance of being acquainted with Lida, believed that she belonged to them, as she was an intimate friend to all. Even I, although rather young back then, felt somewhat exceptional by her side»
- Saule Suleymenova
